Osiris Temple & Abydos Town Site (Kom el-Sultan)
• Urban center of ancient Abydos, where the main temple of the god Osiris stood, and his cult was celebrated, from antiquity until the Byzantine era
• The Temple of Osiris was the starting point for the the god’s great festival procession, in which the image of the god left his temple and episodes of his myth were reenacted in the Abydos landscape each year
• A sacred pilgrimage site that was to ancient Egyptians what the holy site of Mecca is to modern Muslims
• Excavations in the ancient town site surrounding the Osiris Temple precinct began in 1979
