<image:caption>Fig. 30. Managing the collection of archaeological material produced by decades of excavation at Abydos is one of the most important aspects of each season’s fieldwork. Here, as in the group of photos above, the huge volume of ancient pottery generated by the excavations over many years is being processed by specialists from Quft, who carefully identify diagnostic pieces — such as rims, bases, handles, and pieces with distinctive decoration or inscriptions — to be housed in the on-site collections for future detailed study. An equally huge volume of baskets from al-Hagz is central to collections management at the Abydos field house, which incidentally boasts one of the greatest sherd yards ever built in the field! <image:caption>Fig. 3. Painted coffin of the late Ramesside or Third Intermediate Period found just outside the east corner gateway of the Shunet el-Zebib earlier this week. This elaborate burial is exceptional for the quality of its painted decoration, but even more for having survived at all — the wood of the original coffin has been completely devoured by insects, leaving behind only the extremely fragile painted surface of a once extraordinarily fine coffin to be documented, admired, and preserved. <image:title>Abydos Archaeology - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>The Abydos field house was purpose-built for archaeological research during the Penn-Yale Expedition’s first field season in 1967-68. Located on the site of an older field house (that of John Garstang), the current house was inspired by Nubian architecture and built by Egyptian masons, using traditional materials. Over the years, subsequent expansions to the house, which is still in use today, have followed the basic aesthetic of the 1967 design.</image:caption>
